Teaching Teachers
Got it bad got it bad got it bad.. I'm hot for teacher
Yeah RIGHT!! Here I am Suchetha Wijenayake, the well-known teacher's nightmare, and I'm going around Sri Lanka teaching teachers how to use Linux. What the fuck!!
It all started with RedHat, and Manoj and Jithra all telling the Ministry of Edjimacation that if they would buy RedHat licences, RH would get someone to teach their teachers on the care and feeding of their Linux boxen. next thing I know, Mettavihari and Yours Truly are roped into the deal and are offered an adequate (in the sense of may pay for fuel and food, but Eris help you if the vehicle breaks down) sum to go around and start teaching teachers. It started off in Colombo where we were at Lumbini Vidyalaya packing 40 teachers into a tiny room with no air conditioning.. (which is when you begin to realise that they all have armpits)
Next was up in Gurukula Vidyalaya in Kelaniya, a VERY nice place, in fact the best that we have been to so far. The principal was very enthusiastic, and I was very impressed. In fact if the other schools were like this .LK would not have an IT problem. The first day of Gurukula things went well, but Murphy was in full effect the second day. Just as we kicked off, the power went down, and we found it was a "routine maintenance" thing. Great! Just great!!
But we were very lucky. Because we had also done an installation at the Good Shepherd Convent that we were later told had been removed from the location list and replaced with another location. So off we went to GSC and started the teaching there. Many thanks to the Rev mothers and sisters there.
Those four sessions were merely training for what we were REALLY going to do. Two days at Ambalangoda, two more at Matara and two at Kalutara. All three of which went off very smoothly thanks to the good works of the teachers there.
Special mention must be made in the negative sense of Tissa Vidyalaya in Kalutara whose computer lab had been shut down for three months because the teacher in charge of the CLC was transferred. Fuck that shit. There are some great machines in there going idle. Maybe we can get someone like the principal of Gurukula to go give the principal at Tissa some lessons in running a PROPER CLC.
Kudos to PTL (whatever that stands for) for the great service they did for us running all over the country at high speed to make sure the maintenance was done on the machines and they were in working order when we got there.
The entire schedule will be posted shortly so that you know where I will be when I am out and about
